One of the problems to be solved in data communications is how to share among multiple users using a single communication channel or transmission medium that can manage multiple submissions simultaneously. Without a method of organization, appears interference that might well be annoying, or directly impede communication. This concept is called multiplexing or media access control, depending on context. It applies the name “multiplexing” to cases where a single device determines the allocation between different communications channel, such as a hub located at the end of a fiber optic cable, for the end user terminals, multiplexing is transparent. Is used instead the term “media access control” when the user terminals in communication with a device that makes network node, which must use a communication scheme to avoid interference between them, as example a group of mobile phones in communication with a satellite operator.

EDGE is considered an evolution of GPRS (General Packet Radio Service). This technology works with networks GSM. Although it works with any GSM EDGE have implemented GPRS, the operator must implement the necessary updates, plus not all phones support this technology. EDGE or EGPRS, can be used in any transfer of data based on packet switching (Packet Switched), as is the connection to the Internet. The benefits of EDGE over GPRS can be seen in applications that require data transfer speed or bandwidth high, such as video and other multimedia services.
